After talking to a few people about their experiences with the new Light-Ease products, I decided to share some tips when using the new Equine Light-Ease Poll Wrap. This wrap was designed to provide photobiomodulation therapy at the perfect low, slow rate that induces the best pain relief and tissue repair for your horse. With both Red & Near-Infrared Light, lighting up your horse’s poll can reduce stress, improve range of motion and the ability to properly collect the body, as well as calm the nervous system to improve training results!
FIRST – Set the Poll Wrap over the top of the head and ears. It is best to have the wrap end up UNDER the halter so that Light can reach the entire area.
DON’T RUSH – Most horses have no issues when we apply the Poll Wrap, they immediately enjoy the benefits of pain relief and improved circulation. After the first use, once they relax, they rarely resist the Poll Wrap again if they have been introduced to it correctly. However, some horses are resistant, or head-shy, when trying to put on the Poll Wrap for the 1st time. This can be due to fear, but most likely it’s caused by remembered pain.
If your horse is concerned about having this large black cloth coming towards their head, the best approach is to open the velcro throat strap, press the power button once to turn the wrap on, and then place it over the withers. Once they accept it there, slowly (sometimes very slowly) slide the wrap up the neck, towards the poll until the ears slide through the ear holes.
BE PATIENT! In a fearful horse, it might take a couple days to gain their trust that this strange thing actually feels great. The reason I say turn it on at the withers and while sliding up the neck, is to help with relaxation – they really do notice the relaxation that starts as soon as the lights are applied anywhere on the body. As you get the Wrap near the ears, just let it lay over the ears for a few minutes. Maybe that’s all you’ll get done today. Be patient. Some horses may prefer that the lights be off when the Poll Wrap gets near their head.
You can always turn it on after it’s secured. Your horse will love you for helping him relax into the parasympathetic “Rest & Digest” state that is activated when the lights shine on the vagus nerve just behind the ears.
You can always put the Poll Wrap on this way, or simply put it on like a halter once they are accustomed to it.
SECURE THE WRAP – One of the great things about the Poll Wrap is the wide velcro that is sewn into the throat strap of the wrap. This makes it easy to attach and prevents your horse from shaking their head to throw it off when the session is complete. When you secure the wrap, make sure not to tighten the throat strap too tight, making sure that there is no restriction to flexing the neck.
Having the Poll Wrap properly connected allows you to use it with the horse standing tied, or while riding and training. However, never turn your horse loose while using the Lights. There is no warranty on damage done when wraps end up in the mud or being trampled on.
CORRECT THE FIT – once the neck strap is connected, open the velcro for the overlapping flaps at the forehead, and cross one side of the flap over the other side, fitting it snugly against the forehead. This places the LEDs closer to the forehead, and the best Light absorption comes with contact with the body. You can leave the forelock hanging down the center of the face, pull it off to one side, or pull it through the overlapping wrap pieces before you velcro it. Then connect the velcro that connects the 2 pieces that cover the forehead.
TRY THE WRAP ANYWHERE ON THE BODY! (yours or the horse’s) Just because the Light-Ease Poll Wrap is designed to fit well over the head doesn’t mean limiting it’s use there. The photobiomodulation benefits work anywhere on living tissue. Be creative in wrapping it around any joint, muscle, etc. and pay attention to the results! Be sure to send us photos of all of the ways you come up with to use your wrap!
