After using red and near-infrared Light Therapy for horses since the early 1990’s, Photonic Therapy Institute launched their Equine Light-Ease Wraps in early 2024 after a year or so of testing different products and looking for the right fit. We instantly starting putting the wraps through their paces, and quickly figured out that there are as many ways to use the Poll Wrap as there are places on the horse’s (or human) body. Who knew it would prove to be so versatile? Our members and customers keep sending us pictures of all the creative (and beneficial) ways that they have used their Poll Wraps!
Where CAN’T you shine light with this wrap???
Obviously, as the name implies, the Poll Wrap was designed to improve circulation, nerve function, and energy flow through the tight restrictions of the horse’s neck. With it’s wider and deeper coverage of the sinuses and TMJ, this wrap also excels at releasing cranial pressure and relaxing the jaw and hyoid apparatus. We call it a “Happy Hat” because of the obvious relaxation and focus it allow in even the most agitated of horses. This allows for a calmer, and more focused, horse for training, trailering, and even hoof care.
There is no difference in the therapeutic value of this wrap over any of the wraps of other shapes and sizes – the Red and Near-Infrared Light being emitted are exactly the same. However, the large coverage area and built in creases for surrounding the skull also lend themselves to lighting other large areas such as the withers & shoulders or the hindquarters. If it lays well against the body, the light can do its job!
How does Red & Near-Infrared Light help Horses? Light Therapy (aka photobiomodulation) works by using specific wavelengths of light to stimulate the production of ATP and trigger a large number of physical and enzymatic cellular changes. These change benefit living tissue by:
- Giving energy to under-performing cells
- Increasing circulation – carrying away cellular waste and bringing in repair materials
- Improving muscle elasticity, which can help prevent and recover from injuries
- Stimulating the production of new cells- accelerating healing
- Relieving pain and muscle soreness
- Increasing collagen production for healthier, stronger ligaments, tendons, & muscles
- Reducing stress and anxiety
- Breaking apart scar tissue and preventing scars from wounds
- Improving performance and recovery from training
